The Story
The game begins in the fantasy city of Yore, ruled by a paranoid dictator who has strictly forbidden the use of magic. While the King has banished all wizards to suppress their power, the magical arts survive through underground tournaments where casters play Whisp and practice their skills against each other on small table top arenas.
While the broader premise frames Whisp as a hidden training ground for the banished wizards, the core experience of the Whisp game focuses on the Adventurer, who begins with little knowledge of this hidden world. Players take on the role of an Adventurer who has found their way into these tournaments because they have magical abilities. As they travel through the world and unlock more invitations to taverns and tournaments, they uncover fragments of lore through encounters with NPC opponents, who share rumours and musings. These hints gradually reveal the deeper purpose behind the game and why the banished wizards are searching for a new generation of casters and their spirit companions.
Lore behind Rune symbol
The three arcane symbols on the Rune Board carry a deeper significance within the lore of Whisp and was explored in Matt’s novel. The story follows the adventures of a young street urchin who discovers the secret game of Whisp and starts to learn magic.
Each color represents one of the three essential aspects a true wizard must master: Mind (Blue), Body (Red), and Spirit (Green). Only by achieving harmony between these forces can a wizard wield the most powerful forms of magic.
Those who achieve mastery over all three aspects learn to weave the colors together, creating new hues that unlock higher forms of magic. These rare and powerful practitioners are known as Weavers. The arcane symbol of Whisp embodies this philosophy, depicting the three distinct colors intertwined into a single unified sigil.
Because of this, a wizard’s training extends far beyond books and spellcraft. Their discipline combines rigorous physical conditioning, meditation and breathwork, as well as scholarly study, making them resemble Shaolin monks more than traditional sorcerers.
